About us
Maaike Vaandrager (in Singapore since Jan 2010, 3 young children):My background is in international economics. The Dutch development bank 'FMO' was my last employer, In that job I had to travel frequently to developing countries. Creating opportunities for small communities that can earn their cost of living because of a sustainable initiative, is in my view rewarding. My interest in developing countries and poor communities started when living in these countries as a child. During travel and being a volunteer I realized that we can learn a lot from other cultures and in return I believe that we (with our experience and background) can influence lives of individuals by small initiatives that make families/persons financially independant. Funky Fairtrade contributes to that vision.
Enjoy life and help others enjoy life too!
Marijke BöhmI have lived in Singapore since Feb 2009. I studied law and my working experience lies in human rights and migrants, both migrant workers and asylum seekers. I have lived in very different countries and I learnt to believe that every person deserves human dignity and that human rights should be universally respected. Everybody can change the world! every small step is crucial..

Plastic bags. They dont go away. In developing countries, where rubbish collection services are minimal and environmental awareness takes second place to basic survival, plastic bags are everywhere. Choking drains, choking animals, blighting already difficult lives. So Funky Junk decided to do something about it.FunkyJunk is an innovative social enterprise making beautiful, functional, long-lasting items from used plastic bags reclaimed from streets and fields. Buying Funky Junk products contributes to a cleaner environment and provides fair trade income, training and community benefits for its local producers. And make your home or office look funky too!ProductsOld plastic bags are an ideal raw material for our product range theyre available in a range of fabulous colours, are soft and flexible yet strong and washable.Age and sunshine causes the bags to lighten in colour so each of our items is unique. Our careful colour matching process (there is no chemical processing involved) allows us to offer items that can blend with your decor or offer a stunning focal point.

H.O.M.E. Singapore
The organization HOME gives assistance to migrant workers in Singapore who are in need of help; migrant workers who have been abused by their employers or whose rights have been violated otherwise. Among those who got help from HOME are construction workers, fishermen, trafficking victims, service industry staff and domestic workers. HOME runs shelters for both male and female migrant workers in order to provide lodging and food while workers wait for their legal cases or employment disputes to be resolved. Some domestic workers have to stay a long time in the shelter waiting for a decision in their cases. During this stressful period they don't earn money which means they don't provide income for their families who they left behind. Many cases end unsuccessfully and the women involved are sent back to their home countries with horrible experiences but without money. As HOME offers skills trainings, a group of women learnt to sew and they now spend their time in the shelter sewing party flags. FunkyFairtrade sells these party flags and all profits directly go to the women who made them.

Governmental institutions, local civil society and international organisations and NGOs progressively reinforced their involvement through increased assistance and support. In 1999, the network was decided strong enough to handle a second programme and NYEMO II was initiated. NYEMO II would focus on the reintegration of vulnerable women with children and women living with HIV/AIDS.In After 7 years with expatriate management, in 2004 local staffs became strong enough and decided to register with the Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia to create and establish a local Cambodian NGO and the fresh NGO handed over the project to NYEMO Cambodia.
